Sonic Gargles with Garden Marbles – Sonic 3 (Live @ M7; 2 of 3)

MAAAAGFEEEEST!!! So I went to MAGfest 7, and it turns out an Open Mic session was hosted in the Jamspace. I signed up for it, took 3 of my songs, removed the Bass and jammed over them.

This song is my track “Sonic Gargles with Garden Marbles,” originally made for the DoD November 2008 “Sonic Games” month.

I recorded this song originally in Drop-C#. That was the stupidest thing I could have ever done. In this video I play in C#-Standard, which makes it easier, but I have not played the song in this tuning before.

NOTE: Because some n00bs were messing with the soundboard and randomly muting and adjusting the volume of random things, my Bass was inaudible for the first 30+ seconds or so. I’ve overdubbed those parts, best to how I played them at the concert.

The audio is a combination of the audio from the video camera, audio recorded by Escariot from direct-in of my Bass and an area mic, and the original track laid over for better quality.

Sorry all, but I BLOW that intro.

I’ll be frank [Alright, can I still be Garth?]. This song sucks. It’s a good song, but hot damn, my fingers were like pudding by the time I finished the song.

And normally I wouldn’t excuse myself for all the mistakes, but I was even happy to make it to the end with out totally dropping the ball.

I did my best :D

And like I said, I was just happy to play that last note.

Apologies for going off screen a little bit.

Symphony X – Of Sins and Shadows (Bass Cover)

Symphony X song number 2!

Mike Lepond says:
“You play Sins and Shadows amazing !!!

keep it up man,
mike”

I had another SymX tune in mind for recording but that will come later. This is one of their best and most popular songs so I thought I’d give it a go. And there’s also nothing really too difficult about this song as it’s mostly riffy.

Dream Theater – Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu (Bass Cover)

Gotta give John Myung credit for being able to keep up with Petrucci’s obviously-constructed-for-guitar guitar riffs.

Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu are one/two of my favorite Dream Theater songs.

My playing is not perfect in this song, but at least I did my best not to fuck up the tricky parts of the song.

(Real music starts at about 1:33)

This video is of me playing my most well known video game remix: “The Hot Pink Of Blues” on both Bass and Guitar. This tune is a smooth, jazzy remake of “Cyan’s Theme” from Final Fantasy VI.

This is the original tune:

I use some really crappy visual transitions since the guitar doesn’t play all the time and most of you wouldn’t enjoy me doing nothing while I wait for the next guitar solo.

In this video, most of the parts I do will be different from the studio version since a lot of it was improvised.

Also, I tuned my instruments down a whole step for this song.

I first made this song public in the June 2008 Dwelling of Duels competition, the theme was “Boss vs. Hero”.

Jamiroquai – Canned Heat (Bass Cover)

Awww yeah. Funky as hell song. Maybe modern disco a bit, but still one of my favorite songs to jam to.

So this is the Synth Bass played on Bass Guitar. Yes, you heard be right, SYNTH Bass. Most of the songs off of the Synkronized album were played on Synth Bass because Jamiroquai’s long time bassist Stuart Zender had left in the middle of the recording. A couple songs were played by next in line bass player, Nick Fyffe. But don’t get me wrong, great job at making it sound real.

Tabs:

Tabbed for 6-string bass, which was going to be what I was originally going to play on, but the big, beefy 6-string neck isn’t ideal for this funky action.

I would have just jammed the hell out and not played many of the notes that were in the original tune, but the Synth Bass fills up so much low end that it would have clashed too much. At least I beefed up the bridge a bit.

This song is probably the funnest song to jam out too, ever. But, I need to hold myself back because of the potential goofier faces I might make. And, I got my wisdom teeth removed recently. I’m not in the most photogenic state right now, so I just went ahead and cutoff my head again.

And yes, this is THE song from Napoleon Dynamite. And it is also the Youtube debut for the Bass Guitar which I’ve been using the longest, the Yamaha RBX-775.

Jigawattica – Balance (Bass Cover)

I doubt any of you have heard of Jigawattica unless you lived in New York. Jigawattica was a band that my bass teacher from 6 years ago, Jed Ostrom, had when he lived in New York.

It was short lived, but nevertheless, a really good band. Jed help me get on track with my bass playing, so this is my tribute to him.

UPDATE: After talking to Jed, he let me upload the Jigawattica album. Here’s the link to download it.

This is the second video in a 3 pack of videos (because I’ve been slacking) and I owe you all some ‘tube tunes.

These three videos also are the debut of the newest addition to my equipment list: The Ibanez SR300DX. I haven’t had a decent 4-string to play on (the one I had before was a Squire) until I bought this from Zak Griffler for dirt cheap.

This song has two very long drum solos, in the beginning and in the middle somewhere, so to prevent boredom (they’re great drum solos, don’t get me wrong) I’ve added a little random improvisations.

I will be covering all the other songs that Jigwattica had, because they were awesomely funkadelic.

Caught ya with your funk down!

Holy freakin’ jesus this is a tough song. Well, here’s my take, anyway.

This song is funky and awesome, and tough on my wrists.

Chris Wolstenholme normally plays each individual riff on a single string, but it’s more comfortable for me to play it on multiple strings, down the neck. The less shifting, the better.

I did spice things up a little when I couldn’t figure out what Chris plays.

I have distortion on this song, but can anyone tell me how to get that awesome synth filter? :(

P.S. Yes, that is a Burger King mask on my wall.
