Fight For Your Right to Fight

Solstice ORIGINAL ARTIST: Yasunori Shiono – SOURCE: Lufia 2 (Battle 3)
ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson – Lead Guitars, Rhythm Guitars, Bass, Keyboards, Programming; Andreas “SnappleMan” Kotsamanidis – Lead Guitars, Keyboards
INSTRUMENTATION: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Keyboards
GENRE: Metal
NOTES: This is actually a track from the upcoming OverClocked Remix Lufia 2 remix album, which I got permission from the project’s director to submit to DoD. When I laid down the skeleton of the song, it actually naturally turned into a very SnappleMan style. In fact, the song length ended up being 3:33 (the average length of many of SnappleMan’s tracks.) So I asked SnappleMan if he was interested in working with me on the track, and he then joined. He and I split up lead guitar and key duties. Basically, if there’s a single lead guitar, it’s me. If there are two lead guitars, the second is SnappleMan. I do the guitar solo, SnappleMan does the key solo and key + guitar duet.

Kastle Rock

Solstice ORIGINAL ARTIST: Tim Follin – SOURCE: Solstice (Main Theme)
ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson
INSTRUMENTATION: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, Strings, Brass, English Horn, Bassoon, Timpani, Harpsichord
GENRE: Symphonic Metal
NOTES: So remember that MAGfest auction thing I did a year ago? Yeah, well, due to a lot of really shitty circumstances, I was only able to work on the songs the winners gave to me recently. This is the second of two songs, and it’s the Main theme from Solstice. I also entered this for the DoD April 2012 competition. While I did this is in my common Symphonic Metal style, the arrangement is actually pretty conservative. The original song is nearly 3 minutes long, so I didn’t have to add much, and most of the melodies are exactly as they are in the original tune. The goal basically became “make Tim Follin’s song come to life.” Most of the additions are in the accompanying instruments. By the way, the naming scheme for these two MAGfest uction/April 2012 DoD songs originally wasn’t deliberate, but then when I saw the word “Kastlerock” in a game summary about Solstice, I had to do it.

Ragnar Rock

Dragon Warrior IV ORIGINAL ARTIST: Kuichi Sugiyama – SOURCE: Dragon Warrior IV (Overworld)
ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson
INSTRUMENTATION: Guitars, Bass, Drums…Seriously that’s it.
GENRE: RAWK
NOTES: So remember that MAGfest auction thing I did a year ago? Yeah, well, due to a lot of really shitty circumstances, I was only able to work on the songs the winners gave to me recently. This is the first of two songs, and it’s the Overworld from Dragon Warrior IV. I didn’t have too many extravagent ideas for the arragement, so I decided to do it in a pretty straight-forward rock arrangement. This is probably my only remix with no keyboards. I entered this in the April 2012 DoD as an alternate as well as the other MAGfest Auction song.

Splatter Kill/Hell House

Splatterhouse 2010 ORIGINAL ARTIST: Howard Drossin – SOURCE: Splatterhouse 2010 (Skirmish 7)
ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson – Lead & Rhythm Guitars, Bass, Keyboards, Programming; Chris Feener – Lead Guitar
INSTRUMENTATION: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Piano, Strings, Brass, Orchestral Percussion, Scary Sound Effects, Evil Music Box
GENRE: Symphonic Metal
NOTES: This song is actually from the OFFICIAL remix project for Howard Drossin’s Splatterhouse 2010 soundtrack. It was a private project organized by Howard (with help from Jeriaska of Gamasutra) that I go recruited to. Howard’s original soundtrack is a lot of metal and a lot of creepy 50′s style orchestral scoring, but not really the two together. I took one of his battle themes and added some orchestra stuff to it and got internet guitar hero and friend Chris Feener to do some insane shredding from 3:35 to 4:20. All other guitars are me.

I wanted to call the song “Splatter Kill” because it’s appropriately gruesome enough to fit the song. Howard decided to name it “Hell House.” Which is still cool, but I like Splatter Kill better :) . My song is the opening track to the album. Click here to check out the project.

Bond’s Batteries (PuD’s DuDs Mix)

Bond's Batteries

ORIGINAL ARTIST: Monty Norman, Graeme Norgate, Grant Kirkhope, Robin Beanland/Howard Drossin – SOURCE: Goldeneye (Various Themes)/Sonic & Knuckles (Flying Battery Zone)
ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson – Rhythm Guitars, Lead Guitars, Bass, Programming; Chris Feener – Lead Guitars
INSTRUMENTATION: Rhythm Guitars, Lead Guitars, Bass, Drums, Percussion, Organ, Synths
GENRE: Metal

NOTES: FREE SONG! Well, pretty all of my songs are free…but since PuD’s DuDs is a purchasable product, I decided to give everyone a free track from the album in preparation for my album release. I chose this song to release because I think it’s one of the best, if not the best, representation of what this album is about. If you listen to the original DoD version, best you not be drinking anything, because you’ll be spitting it right back out.

Release date for PuD’s DuDs is November 23rd.

RADDa**

Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2

ORIGINAL ARTIST: Simon Viklund – SOURCE: Made for BCR2 “Make Something RADD Remix Contest” (Papagayan Anthem)
ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson
INSTRUMENTATION: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, Synths, Strings, Brass, Percussion, Loops, Cliché Movie-Score Taiko Drums
GENRE: Video Game Score Metal
NOTES: Oh God YES! I am finally in a video game! The developing team for Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 hosted a contest and posted a short track for people to remix. The winner was chosen by the team and would be put inside the game. That was me! But…*GASP* I was not the only winner! A_Rival also was picked to win, so we both get in. No matter! Couldn’t have turned out any better!

Knowing that the majority of submitted remixes were going to be of the electronica variety, I knew I had to make a track that was different and stood out from the rest. I always have live instruments in my remixes, but I knew I couldn’t just do straight up metal, because that’s probably just as cliché, if not more than, as straight up techno! I do a lot of orchestral metal music in a “more apocalyptic Symphony X” variety, but I haven’t done one like this. BCR2 Producer Rey Jimenez hit it on the head when he said that my track was “deserving to be a score for Metal Gear,” because that was definitely a big influence for this track.

BCR2 will be coming out early 2011, so make sure you pick up a copy to hear me while you play an awesome video game!

This Chase is Haunted

Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business

ORIGINAL ARTIST: David Wise – SOURCE: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest – (Haunted Chase)
ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson
INSTRUMENTATION: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, Synths
GENRE: Metal

From the OCR project DKC2: SERIOUS MONKEY BUSINESS.

NOTES: OverClocked Remix released it’s 17th album a couple weeks ago. DKC2: Serious Monkey Business has been in the works for about 2.5 years and is the best OCR album since Project Chaos. Many people think it’s the best one yet. I’m happy to be just a small part of it.

My song, “This Chase is Haunted” (play of words off of the video game band “This Place is Haunted”) is a relatively simpler arrangement style as compared to my other arrangements. I actually seemed to have a little bit more difficulty arranging the source because it was pretty much the same motif over and over, so I had to add a lot of original stuff (and a Lamb of God reference) to push the song just barely past the 3 minute mark. It’s short and sweet I suppose, and we can’t have 7+ minute epics all the time!

As a funny sidenote, ever since I got on DKC2, projected deadlines and release dates have always been within a week or two of Contra 4: Rocked ‘n’ Loaded’s dates and deadlines. So SnappleMan and I kept trying to plan around this, but it always came back to bite us.
