NOTES: Sonic rules. Music rules. Sonic music is amazing. Plain and simple. For the November 2008 DoD, it was the long awaited Sonic month that was overdue in DoD. Thankfully, it didn’t happen until now so I could participate in it. The first idea for a main entry was a long metal medley. I started arranging some things from Sonic 3D Blast, but then the idea just quickly died. I said "screw this," and scrapped the idea. I pulled up all the Sonic tunes and looked for which song would be best in style that is not metal. I’ve always loved Marble Garden Zone, groovy from the beginning and not without great melodies. So I followed up with that, made it groove and rock. I arranged this song also during the same time I’ve been writing songs for Sylva, so there are many similar elements. The other thing I wanted to do is get other players on the song. I decided to ask my bud GuitarBizarre (Mathew Harradine) to do a solo on this track. He does the solo at 2:15 – 2:45. All other guitar leads are me. |

Hell March to the Apocalypse

ORIGINAL ARTIST: Frank Klepacki – SOURCE: Command & Conquer: Red Alert (Hell March), Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (Hell March 2) |
| ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson | |
| INSTRUMENTATION: Rhythm Guitars, Lead Guitars, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, Full Orchestra: 5-piece Strings, Trumpets, Trombones, French Horns, Piccolo, Flutes, Clarinets, Choir, Piano, Concert Bass Drum, Concert Snare, Timpani, Anvils, Cymbals, Concert Toms, Gong | |
| GENRE: Epic Orchestral Metal | |
|
NOTES: Made and entered for DoD October Month. The original inspiration for this song came from watching the video of Frank Klepacki playing both Hell March songs with the Video Games Live orchestra on Youtube. Immediately after watching that, I thought "Holy crap…what a good idea". And after finally getting a computer that would be able to handle everything, I started playing with some ideas. In the end I had 4 instances of EWQLSO Gold Pro XP, an instance of Colossus and an instance of RA, all 8 instrument slots filled. The dialogue clip in this song is from Einstein in the intro video saying "Time will tell…sooner or later…time will tell". |

Bond’s Batteries
![]() |
ORIGINAL ARTIST: Monty Norman, Graeme Norgate, Grant Kirkhope, Robin Beanland/Howard Drossin – SOURCE: Goldeneye (Various Themes)/Sonic & Knuckles (Flying Battery Zone) |
| ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson – Rhythm Guitars, Lead Guitars, Bass, Programming; Chris Feener – Lead Guitars | |
| INSTRUMENTATION: Rhythm Guitars, Lead Guitars, Bass, Drums, Percussion, Organ, Synths | |
| GENRE: Metal | |
|
NOTES: Ok, so this song did not nab me a third victory in DoD, but perhaps that was because I was up against ansgaros’ "Fall of Garuda," and the ideas for this song weren’t exactly fresh. The first idea for this song came 2 years ago when Chris Feener did a metal rendition of the James Bond songs from Goldeneye for N64, much like the arrangement you hear in the James Bond parts of the song. At that time I had downloaded the Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles chiptunes, and I remembered that Flying Battery always reminded me of James Bond. I got the idea to somehow mesh the two together, and that’s where the idea for this song came from. I’ve always liked the idea for this medley, and I wanted to improve it a ton and get it out of the way to move on to new ideas. And since I used Feener’s James Bond arrangements for the James Bond parts, I decided to contact him and as him if he wanted to do the guitar solo, so that insane, guitargasmic solo you hear is the Feen. Most everything from the Flying Battery sections and onward are either really different or completely new. |

The Hot Pink of Blues
![]() |
ORIGINAL ARTIST: Nobuo Uematsu – SOURCE: Final Fantasy VI (Cyan’s Theme) |
| ARRANGED BY: Tony Dickinson - PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson – Guitars, Bass, Programming; Sam Ascher (Shnabubula) – Keyboards | |
| INSTRUMENTATION: Rhythm Guitars, Lead Guitars, Bass, Drums, Rhodes, Synth, Synth Strings | |
| GENRE: Porn Groove | |
|
NOTES: My second entry in DoD. After a 2 month break to focus on my last high school stuff, I wanted to participate again. That month it was Boss vs. Hero, and at first I wanted to do a Boss theme. I quickly determined that doing a Boss theme really wasn’t going to be much of a challenge, so I decided to try a Hero theme. I had a hard time determining what theme I wanted to do for this month and I never decided until about a week before the deadline. I chose Cyan’s Theme from Final Fantasy VI and turned it into a smooth, jazzy version. This track has recently been updated with Shnabubula rocking the rhodes. |

Zero Light

ORIGINAL ARTIST: Makoto Tomozawa, Setsuo Yamamoto, Toshihiko Horiyama, Yuki Iwai, Yuko Takehara – SOURCE: Mega Man X (Spark Mandrill, Boomer Kuwanger, Storm Eagle, Chill Penguin, Sting Chameleon, Armored Armadillo, Launch Octopus, Flame Mammoth, Maverick Encounter, Sigma Fortress Stage #1, Sigma Hench-Reploid Battle, Second Battle with Sigma, Revelation of Second Sigma) |
| ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY: Tony Dickinson | |
| INSTRUMENTATION: Rhythm Guitars, Lead Guitars, Bass, Drums, Keyboards | |
| GENRE: Power Metal | |
|
NOTES: Zero Light was my first entry in DoD. I entered it back in March with the Sci-Fi games month, not expecting myself to do all that well (after all, Shnabubula had entered, so I thought I was completely fucked) but I somehow got first place. I suppose everyone loves the Metal. This song is a medley of a good portion of the Mega Man X soundtrack. All the main levels are here, plus a few boss themes and other themes. Oh, and yes, there is Bass. No, you can’t hear it. |
